Ernst J nger (1895-1998) the son of a wealthy chemist, ran away from home to join the Foreign Legion. His father dragged him back, but he returned to military service when he joined the German army on the outbreak of the First World War. Storm of Steel (Stahlgewittern) was J nger's first book, published in 1920. Greatly admired by the Nazis, J nger remained at a distance from the regime, with books such as his allegorical work On the Marble Cliffs (1939) functioning as a covert criticism of Nazi ideology and methods. Half way through and can't put it down. One of the best books on ww1. Beautifully written,no bad language(and there should be with what these men on both sides went through).his description of the artillery barrages on the somme is exceptionally harrowing.for anyone who is interested in ww1 this is a must

Dicing with death in the midst of the chaos of war
An absolutely brilliant read, how a man can avoid death through design and sheer luck and go on to live to be 103 is beyond me. Amazing account of the chaos of war, interspersed with stories of happy times such as finding coffee and jam in an abandoned enemy trench. Excellent book.
