Tesich died in 1996, at age 53, having completed this epic about overweight, wealthy, 50-year-old Hollywood script doctor Saul "Doc" Karoo, a talentless, chain-smoking alcoholic hack separated from his wife Dianah and fatally flawed with several emotional diseases.

About this product

Product Information

A wickedly funny novel about an American anti-hero. Oscar-winning writer Steve Tesich masterfully creates and destroys the sad, mad world of Saul Karoo. Karoo is an alcoholic who can't get drunk, a loving father who can't bear to be alone with his son, a fixer of film scripts who admits that he ruins every one of them. Calamity and comedy accompany Saul on his odyssey through sex, death and showbusiness as he seeks to 'fix' both a master director's greatest film and his own broken life at the same time.

  • Familiar Territory for Men of a Certain Age

If you're a bloke over 50 with an ex wife kids etc there will probably be enough sympatico material in this boook to make it worth the effort of reading. It's funny and very readable. i discovered half way through that the author died shortly after finishing this book, at 53 or 54. That added to the pathos.
