this is the final book in Sansoms 'Shardlake' series and to my mind, the best! Sansom holds nothing back when describing the atmosphere of the tudor period. Filthy, stinking, corrupt and above all, frightening! so vividly does Sansom write of the characters, places and circumstances in this book, you would think he was actually there, and YOU could almost be there too! This is a page-turner of a book, it just can't be put down until the very last page and when you read the final word, you are left craving more! Shardlake is one of the best characters I have ever read about. A hunchback lawyer in tudor times fighting the cases of his clients and also the predjudices of the population against his deformity. The religious upheaval going on at this time in history is mingled with corrupt politics to give a backdrop of fear and torture while shardlake is investigating a series of brutal murders. If you want the feeling you are alive in tudor england, then this, and the other books in the series, is one you MUST read!Read full review

Having picked up "Dissolution" the first of C.J.Sansom's Matthew Shardlake novels by chance, I became hopelessly addicted and have been reading them all back to back for the last two months. I particularly enjoyed this one, it's slightly reminiscent of Angels and Demons but so much better researched and written. I hadn't read any historical fiction for years but these are rivetting.Tudor London is brought to life and the relationship between Shardlake and Barak , his sidekick, is made very believable. The characters speak modern English but with a touch of formality which suggests an earlier time. The historical detail is painstakingly researched with so much detail that was new to me that I think I shall now move on to some background reading and see what more I can learn.
Gripping storyline. Follows on well from previous book. Rich in detail and atmosphere. Completely believable characters. Open the pages and enter London 1543 and all that it entails. Brilliant!

Another gem in the Shardlake series. Sansom's writing is compelling - you are there in the book smelling, hearing, feeling the age.
