Second of Ludlum's series of Bourne (he only did three before he died and Von Lustbader or whatever his name is took over). I started reading Jack Reacher by Lee Child - first proper novel for a while and I was disappointed and amazed at how he had managed to write and have successfully sold 20-odd of them. Not my style. First person, sentences so short as to be two or three words sometimes - I felt as if I were in primary school with a perverted violent uncle. So I chose the book of one of my favourite films. What a revelation. In all my years I have never read a Ludlum and now I'll not stop until I have read them all. Proper, old-school, compelling descriptive writing that were clearly page-turners before they even invented the phrase. I tend to read whilst - er - otherwise engaged, and ended up with dead legs. I finished the first in a week of occasional dips and did the second - this - in a wonderfully relaxing Sunday day and night. IGNORE the fact that it is set before the huge leaps in technology with mobile phones, GPS, satellite tracking etc etc. Ignore the 80's setting and enjoy it as set in its time, just as you would a Dickens. Or Rowling's Hogwarts - no mobile phones there either..... Simply superb writing that transports you into another time and world - as it should be. No wonder his legacy has lived on as a brand long after his death. I just wish I had discovered them sooner in my life.Read full review
