About this product

Product Information

On 17 April 1986 John McCarthy was kidnapped in Beirut. For the next five years he was cut off from everything and everybody he knew and loved, from family, friends, and, perhaps above all, from Jill Morrell, the girl he was going to marry. For five years, John McCarthy had to endure the deprivation - both physical and psychological - of captivity; the filth and squalor of the cells in which he was kept; the agony of isolation and repeated self-examination; and the pain of ignorance, of not knowing if those he loved even realized he was alive. For Jill Morrell, the five years of John's captivity were a different kind of hell- the initial shock and disbelief; the gradual acceptance that John had been taken and that her life had changed irrevocably, that all their plans had been shattered. But Jill refused to give up hope. For five years she and a group of friends worked ceaselessly on behalf of John and all British hostages in the Middle East, until the extraordinary day in August 1991 when John McCarthy stepped down from an aeroplane at RAF Lyneham. A day when they could begin again. This is their story, a remarkable account of courage, endurance, hope and love.

  • Timeless story of courage and survival.

Amazing story of courage and fortitude in the face of adversity. It has taken me many years to get round to reading John McCarthy's story of his years in captivity as a hostage in Beirut. Nearly thirty years since his release, I have finally got round to reading this book, co-written with his partner of the time, Jill Morrell. It is no less compelling thirty years on, than when it was written. John and Jill's stories of how they survived and campaigned during his time as a hostage run in parallel and I simply could not put the book down once I'd started reading it. You can feel the emotions of anger, frustration and constant fear as you read but at the same time, the hope and resilience of the hostages and the dogged determination of the Friends of John McCarthy to ensure that the hostage crisis did not become forgotten with the passage of time. The book also deals with the aftermath of the prolonged period in captivity and the adjustment back into mainstream society which was very much more difficult for the hostages and their families than one might think. Not every book you read makes a lasting impact on how you view life. This one did.
