I bought this CD because I am a fan of Neil Young and Daniel Lanois. I think this is the best work of Young since 90ies. Lanois did the great job making this lo fi album attractive with his sonics, but it is not about the sound effects, the songs are great, very personal and passionate, specially "war and peace". One of the best Young albums.
If you like your Neil Young melodic and acoustic then this (save one song) is not for you. If you prefer grunge, without drums or cymbals, then play on. Lanouis is a gifted producer and his work with Dylan was exceptional. However here, with just Young's voice and mostly electric guitar he struggles to conjure an atmosphere other than one of repetitive distortion. To me Young's main talent is as an acoustic artist, telling stories with strong lyical potency, sung in his unique soulfull voice. Le Noise is a fair discription (plus a poor pun on the producer's name) of what's on this disc.I hope this collaboration however is a 'one-off' and I look forward to better projects ahead.
Neil Young at his best, vocals and guitar - if I could play I'd cover Peaceful Valley Boulevard, PLUS Walk With Me and Love And War stand out lyrically. If you enjoyed the album Sleeps With Angels, then you should enjoy this.
Husband a bit Neil Young fan. He wasn't disappointed with this CD, although his initial feeling was that it was 'intersting'. It's grown on his in time, just like I did! x
