With library books as his guide, he applied himself to the task of learning to fish. His progress was slow, and for years he caught nothing. A Brilliant Memoir
This is an angling memoir by Luke Jennings who, part from fishing is the Dance Critic of 'The Observer'newspaper. It describes his upbringing and how he first fell in love with angling. This enthusiasm was greatly encouraged by his early friendship with a very serious angler and falconer, Robert Nairac (later GC), who was later (1977) abducted, tortured and murdered by the PIRA in Northern Ireland. Other importantb mentors were his father, another brave soldier and the kind monks of Ampleforth, where both Nairac and jennings were educated. Both are/were serious, believing Catholics. The book is beautifully written, with many asides on history, mysticism, natural history, music: it is not just for anglers and people who are into field sports.
