About this product

Product Information

It's 1946 and author Juliet Ashton can't think what to write next. Out of the blue, she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams of Guernsey - by chance, he's acquired a book that once belonged to her - and, spurred on by their mutual love of reading, they begin a correspondence. When Dawsey reveals that he is a member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, her curiosity is piqued and it's not long before she begins to hear from other members. As letters fly back and forth with stories of life in Guernsey under the German Occupation, Juliet soon realizes that the society is every bit as extraordinary as its name.

A romantic and funny read that doesn't make light of the hardships and complexity of war

This novel in letters is about Juliet Ashton who arrives on Guernsey from fast and fashionable London to study the island and the people behind a whimsically named book club founded during the Nazi occupation. I wish I was able to write letters as bighearted, humane and funny as the ones written by Juliet and her old and new friends, of which there are many. Indeed, the novel is populated with a large number of well-meaning and less well-meaning characters who truly make the island come alive. It's a romantic and funny read, while it doesn't spare the reader the hardships and complexity of war. I recommend it.

  • Most critical review

Really good chronological presentation of events.

I had seen the movie and it got me really interested to read the book as, from experience, there's much more you can get from the book (or maybe it's just me), I simply prefer the book better. Anyway, there's a lot of tit bits of information about the occupation of Guernsey and I kept going to google to look things up in more detail. So, in effect, quite apart from the story within the book itself, the book sort of triggered me to seek out more information, I wanted to know more about what really was going on during those few years.

  • Words fail, just read it

Loveliest book I have read in a while. Not only sweet and very funny, but also serious and sad. The book also gives interesting historical information and is a treasure for anyone who loves books.

  • Sublime

This is the best book I have read this year & I read a lot. I loved that it was written in correspondence style, anyone who has read & enjoyed 84 Charing Cross Road will relish this. I also found the characters compelling & identified with several, I laughed, cried & marvelled at the stoicism shown by the people of this beautiful island. My copy is fairly battered & I have bought this one for my daughter as a gift.

  • Factual with a humerous storyline too.

Not my usual type of book but as they are making a film about it in this area I thought I should read it. I enjoyed finding out about Guernsey during World War 2.

  • Amazing book

Excellent story, by a great writer, compelling story, made into a film. Would highly recommend it, read the book first, then watch the film. Enjoy.

  • Interesting book to read

Possibly more interesting because we had just returned from a holiday in Guernsey which made it appropriate when mentioning various places we had visited.

  • A very interesting book

A really interesting book...much better than the film. Full of historical detail but the authors have interwoven it lightly. Recommended.

  • An easy involving read

This is a very pleasant, enjoyable and easy read. It is rather light but there is nothing wrong with that. It is very informative about the German occupation of Guernsey in WW2.

  • Interesting and compelling.

Unusual format of storytelling, with the use of letters being exchanged.
