About this product

Product Information

There can be no doubt that Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) was one of the greatest and most versatile artists of all time. Because of the greatness of his work, Michelangelo, both as an artist and as a man, has been the subject of numerous studies by the world's leading art historians. There is not a single book currently available that, basing itself on the most recent studies of Michelangelo, treats the artist's entire sculptural output. This book is intended to fill this gap, dealing with the whole of his sculptural output. Thanks to the texts written by Cristina Acidini Luchinat, an internationally renowned art historian, and to the pictures taken by Aurelio Amendola, one of the most outstanding photographers specialising in sculpture, is unique and exhaustive, taking into account the most recent international studies: the result is a beautifully produced, high-quality volume. Contents: Among Michelangelo's works: Battle of the Centaurs, Madonna of the Steps, Crucifix, Sts Procolus and Petronius for the shrine of St Dominic in San Domenico, Bologna, Bacchus, Pieta (St Peter's, Rome), David, and other sculptures for various patrons. There are also Michelangelo's important sculptural commissions from the Medici, until his final departure from Florence in 1534, from Julius II and from the della Rovere heirs. Also includes Michelangelo's last thirty years, from 1534 until his death in 1564 when the statues of Brutus and Rondanini Pieta, were made. A particular section will be dedicated to the themes related to Michelangelo's sculpture: the carving of the marble, the handling of the surfaces, the linea serpentina, and the non-finito. An interesting part will deal with photography and experiments with a three-dimensional digital examination of Michelangelo's sculptures. AUTHOR: Cristina Acidini Luchinat is sovrintendente of the Florence Museums. She directs the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, a national institute devoted to conservation. The director of important conservation work and author of numerous publications, she has had various assignments in Italy and abroad in the fields of conservation and museum management. She is a member of prestigious cultural institutions, including the ancient Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, and has received numerous honours and prizes. Aurelio Amendola's long career as a photographer has largely been devoted to the figurative arts. SELLING POINTS: A wonderful book on the masterpieces of sculpture that Michelangelo created With stunning new photography by Aurelio Amendola 260 colour illustrations
