If you like stories around a potted history of the location then this is for you. Full of little tidbits of informaion. One of Rutherfurds better books and not the least bit dry.

I bought and read the paperback version of this novel whilst staying in London during 1999. I have always loved the history and atmosphere of this famous city, but reading this book really brought the place to life for me. I was entirely engrossed following Rutherford’s families through two millenniums of history from small agricultural settlements using the resources of the Thames, to the sprawling 20th century world famous metropolis. London is truly a fascinating city, and Rutherford guides the reader through its history from the perspective of a set of families whose circumstances fluctuate over time, just as the landscape surrounding them fluctuates to reflect the changing world around it.
