About this product

Product Information

When William Blacker first crossed the snow-bound passes of northern Romania, he stumbled upon an almost medieval world. There, for many years he lived side by side with the country people, a life ruled by the slow cycle of the seasons, far away from the frantic rush of the modern world. In spring as the pear trees blossomed he ploughed with horses, in summer he scythed the hay meadows and in the freezing winters gathered wood by sleigh from the forest. From sheepfolds harried by wolves, to courting expeditions in the snow, he experienced the traditional way of life to the full, and became accepted into a community who treated him as one of their own. But Blacker was also intrigued by the Gypsies, those dark, foot-loose strangers of spell-binding allure who he saw passing through the village. Locals warned him to stay clear but he fell in love and there followed a bitter struggle. Change is now coming to rural Romania, and William Blacker's adventures will soon be part of its history. From his early carefree days tramping the hills of Transylvania, to the book's poignant ending, Along the Enchanted Way transports us back to a magical country world most of us thought had vanished long ago.

  • An enchanting read

William Blacker is ahead of his time. When curiosity took him to NE Romania in the late 1990s he immediately recognised that the old way of life practised in the Transylvanian villages was under threat. William wanted to experience the lifestyle at first hand & stayed with a local peasant & his wife for 4 years as rheir adopted son, working as hard as the local people did, relying on horse-drawn transport & handmade tools; even choosing to wear their clothes which were handmade & sewn or woven at home! After his return to England, Prince Charles met & befriended William Blacker & they have remained good friends. Incidentally, the Prince owns two properties in the Saxon Villages & Sibiu has now attained World Heritage status. The book is well written & carefully chosen photographs illustrate many interesting features of an almost extinct culture within Europe. It's a fascinating account made all the more enjoyable by William's encounter with a tempestuous gypsy girl & her vagabond connections. There's no fairy-tale ending but I did notice that Valentin, William's 10 year old son was warmly embraced by Prince Charles during a royal visit to Romania earlier this year... • A most original book.

An enchanting look at a way of life in our time but which I fear, has changed recently.
