This book is my introduction to John Buchan & although I have seen every film & TV version of The Thirty-Nine Steps it was watching the film Operation Mincemeat, with a character reading that novel, that made me look for a copy. I enjoy his writing style & Richard Hannay is an engaging character. One review described it as 'old-fashioned', it is not, written in 1915 &, set a year earlier when Europe's simmering tensions were about to explode into war, it was of its time. I have now read three of the five stories in this chunky volume & thoroughly enjoyed every one.
