Grand theft auto 3 is really was a work of art at the time. Fans of the series were used to the 2d overhead graphics in GTA, GTA London and GTA 2, so the series successful jump to 3d was widely praised.
the graphical abilities of the Renderware engine enabled DMA Design to create a more detailed city and characters, which in part would make the story to be told in cutscenes instead in a block of text like in the previous enteries.
Today the game holds up quite well gameplay wise but the graphics did not do so (but its easy to look pass that since the missions are still as awesome as they were back in 2001).
Have this in mind if you want to buy this game.

I, like most, already knew of this game, of course, so when it came to buying in some games from memory (when I was given a PS2) this was one of the ones top of my list. Anyone who's ever played it before, won't be disappointed in revisiting it and those who have never played it before, will probably love it; go on release some angst onto the fictional world
Any fan of the Grand theft auto series should have this in their collection, in my opinion it’s right up there with Vice City and San Andres as iconic games.
