Superb game. Beautiful graphics and a great storyline based on a Japanese tale called Kwaidan. It's both eerie and suspenseful in equal measure. The gameplay is good for a PS2, but I will not reveal more as this is a spoiler free zone!!Very highly recommended.
This survival horror is more a testament to the pursuit of immortality and it's diabolical results. Primarily the main problem is appearance of the ravenous Gaki (Hungry Ghosts) or what westerners would at first presume as the undead or the joke zombies are actually the accursed aberrations of the hapless corpses upon which certain ancient Chinese methods of attaining immortality pit their unfortunate souls into a state of eternal purgatory. Only your closest relatives know of this curse and you are inevitably responsible for the upkeep of the family estate including the maintenance of your would be departed family members and servants. Additionally you too are sized up for your role in the cycle of life and not death, blood is thicker than water and the mulberry trees housed within your family estate appear to be only solution and cause this dreadful paradox to reoccur. 1. Lights off for this game, like the Echo Night series, darker is clearer than having the brightness cranked up. One of a handful of games by From Software, thats actually geared to play easier in the dark, brightness setting to default or lower (depending on how high you prefer your screen brightness settings) Darker the clearer, as you'll get the atmosphere of this gekiga horror and your eyes adjust so you can see the hands before they reach toward your shimmer of your oil lamp illuminated surroundings. You may prefer to play with lights on but then won't adjust to the darkness so then it's easier for your pursuers as you won't witness a thing before your untimely death. 2. Do not play if you have family history of cardiovascular disorders (heart conditions, heart attacks etc) Horror can induce many unexpected things and be wise to avoid it at all costs, this game more than emphasises that. 3. Need to play this game in Japanese language, English subtitles are available and less irritating than hearing the clowns that voiceovered the English dialogue. I prefer no dialogue to wooden voice "actors" or idiots as I always perceived them, those sad and unfortunate beings are just bad cheap voiceovers with hideous awards for irritating prittle prattle on everyones favourite mainstream franchises. Impo of course in my professional opinion, myself having worked in animation majority of my life. Spanish, French or Italian voiceovers aren't as dire as English voiceovers, why is that? Anyway, back on topic this game is gekiga horror, it's entirely Japanese developed and published also intended for the western otaku who pursue Japanese horror. All other survival horrors have since appeared flat and linear, especially plot and atmosphere wise, lighting and sound in this game are orchestrated similar to classic cinema horror of the originators of this sub-genre that is always presumed dead, literally. The front cover of the Japanese version of this game is evident of the terror that is the reanimation of the recently departed. Zombies in the west are a running joke (running? seriously) but the preta, gaki and the tortured souls of nearest and dearest are more reality than you could ever imagine. As it clearly isn't in the slightest bit funny and any brutality is going to get us nowhere fast. Immortality is demonic and the product of which is demons in the flesh, ultimately the paradox can be resolved by preventing immortality from being obtained but what if your family has the origins silk trade and it's lineage to take care of then you might consider a few thousand years or soRead full review
