Developed by Japanese software house Ancient, Car Battler Joe is an amalgamation of two distinct genres, role-playing and vehicular combat. Car battling performs a vital function in the world of Galacia; life revolves around these battles that serve as both the entertainment for and the livelihood of its citizens. You'll take the role of the son of Champion Car Battler Jim Todoroki, and embark on a deadly quest to solve the mystery of the disappearance of your father while proving you're worthy of the legacy he left behind. During your escapade you'll find yourself transporting cargo, running errands for many of the people you meet, and of course, engaging in combat with other less-than-savory opponents. The battle sequences are seen from an angled overhead perspective and utilize a scaling technique reminiscent of the Super NES' "Mode 7." <br><br>It may not buy happiness, but money earned from the various jobs you complete can be used to outfit your vehicle with the latest and greatest equipment. Customization is a key element of the game, allowing you to install multiple weapons, add Overdrive features (essentially special abilities such as jumping or shields), or tinker with the various parts your ride is composed of. When not engaged in combat, players will wander locales from a top-down perspective reminiscent of most 16-bit RPGs, seeking out information or just engaging in idle chitchat. The game provides link-cable support for up to four players, however each person needs a copy of the game.
