Reasonable price for a rack mount control pre-amp
I am putting together a rack cabinet audio system for my workshop and hobby area. The power end will use a pair of mono-block Altec amplifiers that are to be driven by the Pyramid control pre-amp. I gave it a fairly thorough check out run and can say this: 1. The AUX, CD, TUNER, and TAPE IN function as expected. 2. The PHONO input is sensitive enough for MM cartridges and has the typical 47k termination impedance. 3. The MIC input is not what I expected. The manual specs it at 0.5 volt sensitivity, and I thought that was a misprint. NO, it is not. The MIC input has a 600 ohm terminating impedance, and no non-amplified mic that I know of will be anywhere close to that voltage level. That input should have a sensitivity of about 20 to 30 millivolts. Further, there is no indication on the unit or in the manual if the 600 ohms is for a balanced or unbalanced input (it is a 1/4" phone jack, which could be either a T-S or a TRS jack for balanced systems). There is no way to tell without taking the unit apart. 4. ALL of the rotary controls are detented, another unexpected discovery. Thus, setting an exact level point can be tricky if the desired setting falls between the detents. 5. I like the mute function. It kills the output when using any source. That will be handy when I need to use a telephone and I can silence the system easily. 6. I would have given the unit a 5 star rating if not for the nearly useless mic input and the detented controls. It is a good control pre-amp for the money and a great way to build up a budget system with various components.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
