A moving combination of sincerity and simplicity, it acknowledges that sadness is not always avoidable or reasonable and perfects the art of making complicated feelings plain. No writer could ask and get more than that.".

About this product

Product Information

A heartbreakingly honest account of a father's grief for his son from the illustrious pairing of two former Children's Laureates. Very occasionally the term non-fiction has to stretch itself to accommodate a book that fits into no category at all. Michael Rosen's Sad Book is such a book. It chronicles Michael's grief at the death of his son Eddie from meningitis at the age of 19. A moving combination of sincerity and simplicity, it acknowledges that sadness is not always avoidable or reasonable and perfects the art of making complicated feelings plain. It wasn't made like any other book either; Michael Rosen said of the text, I wrote it at a moment of extreme feeling and it went straight down onto the page ... Quentin didn't illustrate it, he 'realized' it. He turned the text into a book and as a result showed me back to myself. No writer could ask and get more than that. And Quentin Blake says that the picture of Michael being sad but trying to look happy is the most difficult drawing he's ever done... a moving experience.

  • Lovely book for anyone who is grieving

Lovely book suitable for adults and children. It is well illustrated and describes the deep sadness we feel when a loved one dies in clear and easy to understand ways. I gave it to my grandson who has been quietly grieving ever since he lost his Aunty Sarah last year - she is also my youngest daughter, and we both found comfort in this sweet story by Micheal Rosen.

  • A must have book for everyone. Young or old

Fabulous book. I heard about it via various posts when grieving and was surprised I hadn’t heard of it as I’m an avid reader of all kinds of books. It’s such a powerful, sad, happy, consoling and gives every person the power to be what they want and feel what they want and not have the added stress of thinking it’s just them. It shows how we all grieve in different ways. How we can be both happy and sad. It’s just a most wonderful piece of writing and the accompanying art work from Quentin Blake is superb.

  • Sad book

I love Michael Rosen. This book is for children. Although it does cover emotions and circumstances we all go through in a a simple no nonsense way. It’s really showing us it’s ok to feel sad and not to bury our feelings. Life is sometimes sad and it’s about living through it and sometimes with it. It’s part of life.

  • Understanding loss.

This covers what is a difficult subject, death, dying, and missing people who are no longer here, in a gentle way which is most helpful for the younger reader. Written by someone who has complete understanding of the subject and knows who he is writing for.
