John Connolly has created a “monster” but in the very best way. Charlie Parker is a flawed hero and a dark one at that and yet the reader cannot but help be drawn to him, to empathise and cheer him on - the little candle of good in a dark and evil world. His associates are as intriguing and occasionally laugh out loud funny - Connolly never allows pathos to cloud the scene, not does he preach good v evil; his skill is in taking an ordinary man (Charlie Parker) and, having submitted him to extraordinary suffering, weaves a narrative showing how even the ordinary can be forged into the extraordinary, how someone can make a difference albeit in the world of fiction. The Parker novels can be read as stand alone books and are nonetheless fascinating for all that but I recommend the series, read in order, to get the best of everything that Charlie Parker (through his creator, Connolly) haas to offer.
