Product Information

The definitive edition of the work of one of America's greatest poets This is the definitive edition of the work of one of America's greatest poets, increasingly recognised as one of the greatest English-language poets of the twentieth century, loved by poets and readers alike.Bishop's poems combine humour and sadness, pain and acceptance, and observe nature and lives in perfect miniaturist close-up. The themes central to her poetry are geography and landscape -- from New England, where she grew up, to Brazil and Florida, where she later lived -- human connection with the natural world, questions of knowledge and perception, and the ability or inability of form to control chaos. This new edition -- edited by Saskia Hamilton -- offers readers the opportunity to take in, entire, one of the great careers in twentieth-century poetry.

  • A must

Studied Bishop for my Creative Writing degree and this book confirms her place as a world-class poet.

  • Disappointed

It is subjective. Others may love her stuff. I find it over wordy, ponderous and lacking the vital thrust forward. I also miss a message - what else is poetry for? But don't be put off. If you like involved circumlocutions - poetry as an intellectual exercise, this is definitely for you.
