  • A light on America's attitudes to the World War 1939 - 1945

These cartoons are fascinating. Culled from the Newspaper PM there are not just cartoons by Dr Seuss but by other contributors as well. Cartoons were significant to PM because unlike most other newspapers at the time they didn't run advertisements, the better to stay independent. (make the wrong editorial comment and you could lose 28 advertising accounts and a huge chunk of income). Back in 1940 it was by no means certain that America would get involved in the European war : - organisations like the Bund and individuals like Lindburgh (yep, Lucky Lindy)would favour the German side, people like America First would just sit back and wait to see who won.... and there were those anti-English types who favoured Germany because the enemy of their enemy must be their friend (Google Operation Kathleen). PM was on the side of those who came out on top in the end....it is fascinating to see political cartoons of a bygone era with the benefit of hindsight. Its interesting for example to see the view of the Japanese prior to Dec 1941... This book is fascinating as a window on history, on America, and on the independent press that is now again under threat and has never been as strong as the massively funded media who are affected by their backers as to what they say. (But lets give them a chance! Yes, and try the German manicure) I would recommend it. and through EBay I got it a lot cheaper than up That River....
