The Marantz PMD661 Digital Recorder is a solid state, portable, digital audio recorder that will capture stereo audio in either 16-bit or 24-bit depths. The PMD661 has two built-in studio-quality, stereo, condenser microphones and two balanced XLR mic inputs with 48-volt phantom power. The device can be powered by AC, or by 4 AA batteries, which provide up to 5 hours of recording time. The audio can be stored on SD card or SDHC card flash media, and played back through the built-in speaker, or output to headphones through the headphone jack. The Marantz PMD661 Digital Recorder can be used for electronic news gathering, journalism, law enforcement, court recording, recording meetings, or capturing live music. The PMD661 is also perfect for musicians or producers who wish to capture field recordings for use as source material. The Marantz PMD661 Digital Recorder’s 24-bit, 96kHz digital recording allows the user to collect and store high resolution audio for high-fidelity applications. The lower depth 16-bit capability, provides a higher recording capacity for settings where sterling audio resolution is less important than collecting a higher volume of clear audio. The Marantz PMD661 Digital Recorder has built-in stereo condenser microphones positioned on the top corners of the device. This provides stereo separation and capture. For cases where a set of microphones extended on cables is an advantage, the Marantz PMD661 Digital Recorder includes full-size, balanced, XLR condenser microphone inputs with 48-volt phantom power. This means that a user can plug two studio microphones into the PMD661 and gain the utility of recording from two mics at a distance. The Marantz PMD661 Digital Recorder features Retake, which uses a single button to review the previously recorded section, and create a drop-in point, from which to begin the next recording. This feature is valuable for taking notes, and when recording dictation. The Marantz PMD661MKII Digital Recorder also comes bundled with Marantz Professional Marker Editor Software. Marker Editor Software allows edits to be made from the device, then adjusted using a PC or laptop to prepare audio for fast distribution. The Marantz PMD661MKII Digital Recorder measures 6.5 inches, by 3.7 inches, by 1.4 inches. The handheld size facilitates easy recording on the go and in the field. It is built into a rugged case and features professional quality knobs, buttons, and input plugs. Sample rates for digital WAV recordings are 44.1, 48, and 96 kHz. For recording MP3s, the Marantz PMD661MKII features 6 selectable sample rates from 192 kbps, to 32 kbps. This recorder also has a S/PDIF digital audio input for connecting other equipment. The Marantz PMD661MKII is also password protected to secure files. The front of the device features a large OLED (organic LED) display. The Marantz PMD661MKII Digital Recorder also has a USB 2.0 port for fast file transfers to a PC, laptop, or USB storage device. Clean sound and fairly simple to use.
I record community radio stories and podcasts. The Marantz PMD661 digital recorder does a great job. I use dynamic microphones and I don't to have to boost the gain too high to get a good signal. The unit has many options -- more than I need -- but still is easy to figure out. Battery power is sufficient for a couple of hours. A Fine Machine
