One of the semi-forgotten facts of the camera industry since the 1950's has been the gradual evolution of the "zoom" lens. At first viewed with contempt, then suspicion, then acceptance, the "zoom" lense today is the dominate photographic optic in the business. To be sure, single focal length lenses remain, usually as specialized large aperture lenses on the wide angle end, and high powered, high priced, high end optics on the telephoto side. However, the vast majority of amatuer and professional photographers use zoom lenses. The Canon EF 35-80 f/4-5.6 is just one lense which helped win the battle. There is nothing particularly special about it. In fact, it's just another example of a plastic mount "kit" lense that was probably sold with on the early Canon Rebel series. However, in its own way it pushes the envelope. One of my Canon A cameras currently has a 35-70 FD lens on it. That was a "replace the 50mm normal" lens of its day. This one extends to 80mm, giving it a more acceptable "portrait tele" focal length. So with its all plastic construction , autofocusing and "safe" set of focal lengths--plus the simple fact that it works, this lense will do just fine on my EOS Elan. Of course, eventually wide to portrait length lenses would expand in range to the 24/28 to 105 lenses of today. Indeed, the best film camera lense I have is a 28-105 3.5-5.6 Canon EF II that still gives me good pictures. Now I can place one of its ancestors on the shelf beside it, on the very camera that was the ancestor of my Elan IIe and 7Ne. Sadly, when I do serious photography now, I usually reach for my Canon G11. As for the rest of my Canon stuff, well, lets say it feeds my sense of the anachronistic, even in this brave new digital age.Read full review
A lightweight, stealthy alternative to a big white heavy 70-200 f/2.8 lens. Not white, not too big, lightening fast focus. The 70-200 f/2.8IS is a little soft wide open at the long end. This lens is much sharper. Pair it with a 1/4xTC and have a 280mm f/4 lens - the kenko pro dg teleconverter works great with this lens. If you shoot a lot at this focal length, this lens is a real bargin. A great portrait lens on a full frame dSLR. If you shoot in good light only, consider the 70-200f/4L instead. it can be had on ebay for a great price, there are no bad copies of this lens, and you get a zoom. In poor light, the f/2.8 allows twice as much light in.
I use this Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM Lens for a month. This lens satisfy me very... This lens is a very good build quality, superb optically. Image quality is very nice. Sharpness, contrast and colors are excellent. Focus works very fast, quiet and accurate. Flare is well controlled. Especially bokeh appear amazing. F/2.8 at 200mm create a very sharp object while appear very nice background blur. This is one of the superb portrait lens. The 200/2.8L II is light weight and nimble when in action handle (if the lack of zoom is acceptable). Pros... - Light weight, comfortable handle. - excellent optic lens. - very good build quality. - An excellent value. Cons... - No weather sealed. - Tripod Mount Ring not included.
I found this lens to be very good opticaly especially so considering it's price. The light weight proved to make this lens a very versital in the bag and on the camera. I recomend this lens to anyone who wants a good medium to telephoto zoom, that is very easy to use and take care of.
You get what you pay for when you buy lenses. This is exactly what one would expect for a lens of this price. It is made of thin plastic and is really light. It doesn't *feel* sturdy at first but upon closer inspection it's adequate, which is exactly how I would describe the build. It takes solid pictures on my T2i, haven't tried out and video yet. Overall good, I would recommend for someone just starting out or needing a backup lens.
This lens is just what you need if you desire near perfect IQ at this focal range. I sold a 70 200 F4 and replaced it with this fella and for me it is perfect for several reasons. For just a couple hundred more you get better Image Quality, Faster Max Aperture, and perhaps more important to me is that it is black and small. I do mostly travel photography and pulling out a long bright white lens in Varanasi India just made me feel like a loser. (maybe I am anyway, but I dont need the point rubbed home). IS would be nice especially on a crop body, but then so would owning a chariot of gold instead of a 91 Honda accord. Great lens, very underrated. Buy it.
Best auto focus lens I've ever used. I can only compare it to Minolta A.F. lens but the Canon is lighter , faster, and quieter. This is important to me because I hike a lot and need something light and quiet. I also have another Canon body for back-up. I have two Minolta 450 si's but I find them a little old fashioned compared to the Canon. However, the Minolta's have served me quite well and I do feel that they might hold up under rougher conditions such as falls and moisture. This remains to be seen.
As long as I use the Canon EF II AF 80-200mm F/4.0-5.6 I am very satisfied with the results of the drawing. The sharpness of the picture is pretty good although I'm still exploring it from different objects. But overall I am very pleased this lens. Various results of my photos with this lens has produced many dollars. Bravo II AF Lens Canon EF 80-200mm F/4.0-5.6. Unfortunately for the series using USM is far from my financial budget. If I had a series of USM I wanted to be a professional photographer.
got his a few weeks ago, I use it mainly for zooming in on wildlife and zooming in on my kids for a far. the ability to get great head shots ofr the kids when you are "not present" produces remarkable results. I was afraid for not having image stabilization and me photographing using hand held most of the time. but the 2.8 allows you to compensate and more for the lack of image stabilization (moving or kids and other forms of wildlife do not comply with stabilization...) new horizons were opened!
This is a great lens, very sharp and fast! Only thing lacking is the IS...if Canon made this with IS this would be a phenomanal lens! Wish you could focus close than five feet with it. It is a light lens which makes it easy for women to hand hold with out their arms and hands tiring... :^) Well worth every penny, again not a five star as no IS. 9/10 rating in my book.
