This is an extraordinary book: the main character is not particularly likable, but it is impossible not want to know what happens next. It is set in the USA so some of the language is unfamiliar but it doesn't take long to understand.

Nothing like the reviews said it would be. Billy Connolly highly recommended it, all I can say is he never read it. It is not remotely funny, an impossible plot with implausible characters. A very hard book to read, it was a struggle to reach the end, one of those books you hope will get better the deeper you get in, but it just doesn't deliver.

The book was as good as new and I found personally that the writing style bought the characters and location to life vividly. It was a recommendation from Billy Connolly that lead me to read it. The subject matter finds comedy in the often tragic circumstances of the people of New Orleans and the unusual behaviour of the characters. Unfortunately the author died and wrote no further books, I believe.

Bought this book after it was recommended by My hero and comedy royalty Billy Connolly. A present for my daughter and she absolutely loved it. It made her laugh out loud. Thank you Sir Billy and eBay x

The great Billy Connolly recommended reading this book on one of his shows and it hasn’t been a disappointment. Tragic though if you look up the author who only received accolades for his book after he committed suicide. Quite dry humour but it will make you chuckle

This book comes to the fore at least once every generation, as new readers discover the gargantuan Ignatius O Reilly. I have bought this book at least ten times, as I keep giving my copy away to friends who have not had the pleasure of reading this extraordinary and delightful book. To all new readers, enjoy the read of a lifetime.

A really good find that is well written, intelligent and funny and lives up to its cult status. I bought it because Billy Connolly recommended it and it does not disappoint.

I must admit, I have only been able to read into chapter two but it is so boring. I cannot understand some of the American slang. I suppose I need to read more of the book to give a true view but that maybe later rather than sooner at the rate I am going. This book is very hard going for me. I only bought it because it made Billy Connolly laugh.

Oddly, I heard a resounding recommendation for this book on radio 2 and followed up with a purchase. A contrived plot, weaving several odd characters into each others lives but concentrating on the self-inflicted outcomes of our main character, Ignatius' views and actions. Certainly not larf a minute but curiously entertaining, nonetheless.
