About this product

Product Information

The history of a family through 264 objects - set against a turbulent century - from an acclaimed writer and potter **THE NUMBER ONE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER** **WINNER OF THE 2010 COSTA BIOGRAPHY AWARD** 264 wood and ivory carvings, none of them bigger than a matchbox- Edmund de Waal was entranced when he first encountered the collection in his great uncle Iggie's Tokyo apartment. When he later inherited the 'netsuke', they unlocked a story far larger and more dramatic than he could ever have imagined. From a burgeoning empire in Odessa to fin de siecle Paris, from occupied Vienna to Tokyo, Edmund de Waal traces the netsuke's journey through generations of his remarkable family against the backdrop of a tumultuous century. 'You have in your hands a masterpiece' Sunday Times 'The most brilliant book I've read for years... A rich tale of the pleasure and pains of what it is to be human' Daily Telegraph 'A complex and beautiful book' Diana Athill **ONE OF THE GUARDIAN'S 100 BEST BOOKS OF THE 21st CENTURY**

  • The hare with amber eyes

So interesting and so many references to people, places and things that I had to learn about . It took me a long time to read and so fascinating and I learnt so much of historical interest as well as the author’s family

  • An excellent read

Fascinating, it draws you in the more you read as the story unfolds. The author has researched his family meticulously and brought its history to life.

  • Hurrah for this Hare

A riveting, fluent account, not only of a remarksable family but of the history and composition of Japanese netsuke figures. Compelling reading, but one minor quibble is the tiny font size of this paperback edition. I bought this to replace the original hardback edition, lost on holiday, but in which the font was much larger and more legible for those readers like myself who are visually impaired.

  • I am reviewing the book, not the product: I do not know if this is the requirement.

  • Compelling book

Love the research and historical background. Makes the late 18century Europe, albeit the rich and famous, come alive. Parallels with modern life.
