Alistair Urquhart was a soldier in the Gordon Highlanders captured by the Japanese in Singapore. He not only survived working on the notorious Bridge on the River Kwai , but he was subsequently taken on one of the Japanese 'hellships' which was torpedoed. Nearly everyone else on board died and Urquhart spent 5 days alone on a raft in the South China Sea before being rescued by a whaling ship. He was taken to Japan and then forced to work in a mine near Nagasaki. Two months later a nuclear bomb dropped just ten miles away . . . This is the extraordinary story of a young men, conscripted at nineteen and whose father was a Somme Veteran, survived not just one, but three close encounters with death - encounters which killed nearly all his comrades.

If you're ever having a rough day, read this.
A raw and non sugar coated account into the depths of human suffering at some of its worst in World War II. After getting an appreciation of the amount of trauma and hard work Alistair Urquhart had to endure, it makes the average person really appreciate what they have.

Heartbreaking, but compelling
Mans inhumanity to man is bought into sharp reality in this book. It is truly amazing what some are able to endure. Alistair Urquhart was just an ordinary lad, like so many others who went to war. Well written and easy to read, I simply couldn't put this book down... A must read for those interested in the men who survived the horror of war.

Incredible, unbelievable and truly shocking. Should be read in schools.....
An incredible account of true horror. This book kept me thinking for days afterwards. This story has left its mark on me, this should be taught in schools as the Jewish Holocaust is. I was fortunate enough to meet the author, its unbelievable to think that soldiers that survived this were then expected to carry those horrors to thier own graves. The British government had them sign the secrecy act before they had even arrived home!!!!!

I could not put this book down, anvamazing survival story that brings out the brutality that was carried out. This book should be taken into schools as a must read.
