A raw and non sugar coated account into the depths of human suffering at some of its worst in World War II. After getting an appreciation of the amount of trauma and hard work Alistair Urquhart had to endure, it makes the average person really appreciate what they have.

Mans inhumanity to man is bought into sharp reality in this book. It is truly amazing what some are able to endure. Alistair Urquhart was just an ordinary lad, like so many others who went to war. Well written and easy to read, I simply couldn't put this book down... A must read for those interested in the men who survived the horror of war.

Told in a real life way, by a man who went through hell, and the facts also portray the British abroad in management role's as deplorable,no wonder all the local people were glad to see the British go.

An incredible account of true horror. This book kept me thinking for days afterwards. This story has left its mark on me, this should be taught in schools as the Jewish Holocaust is. I was fortunate enough to meet the author, its unbelievable to think that soldiers that survived this were then expected to carry those horrors to thier own graves. The British government had them sign the secrecy act before they had even arrived home!!!!!
I could not put this book down, anvamazing survival story that brings out the brutality that was carried out. This book should be taken into schools as a must read.

I watched the documentary on TV about the author and then bought the book. Could not put the book down and I would certainly recommend it if you like 2nd World War history books etc. Mans inhumanity to man is clearly here for all to see and should not be forgotten. Also the appalling way that Japanese POWs have been treated by British authorities was clearly highlighted in this book and they were certainly forgotten. Very well written and an amazing read.
