Just started a digital SLR course. Being a pensioner l can't afford high street prices.. Found this sight on eBay.the lens was/is superb giving stunning results. That pleased with it l've given details to other people on the course..defiantly recommend them and will use them again.
What a lot of people don't seem to realise about this lens is that it is a very sharp 135mm prime when the softfocus is turned off. And at f2.8 reasonable fast, which makes it a bargain at the prices these are currently going for on ebay! I am extremely happy with the results I am obtaining from this lens. I didn't buy it for the softfocus, but am finding that fun to use. Sure these days you can replicate the effect in photoshop, but this way is so much easier and doesn't involve hours spent in front of a computer. You also have the oportunty to learn as you go along which subjects make good soft-focus subjects, rather than waiting until you get home. Flowers are excellent subjects, as are statues! I would highly recommend this lens to anyone!
My favourite lens. Forgetting the soft-focus option, at f2.8 it's fast enough to really expand the range of photography you can do, and the long focal length (my body gives 1.6x effective length) with a relatively short lens compared to a zoom makes it a very very attractive lens. Pictures are super-sharp and clear with excellent pretty and artistic bokeh. The fact that it's not USM is a big nothing to me - makes no difference to me at all, and I feel the lens is A1. If you offered me the choice of this or the 70-210 2.8L IS, of course I'd choose the white lens, but not as easily as you'd think. It wouldn't be about picture quality because I've used that lens and wouldn't be able to tell the results apart from this one - it would be about the zoom range, IS and weatherproofing. THEN, you have the two soft-focus settings which work by rotating an internal element with lovely results. It adds a whole other dimension of creativity that makes you enjoy your camera more and feel ashamed to have previously thought that this kind of effect could be achieved with Photoshop. Only one thing I'd change - the minimum focal distance of three metres. Conclusion: to get any better, or even as good, you'd need to spend a lot more money. The alternatives I considered were the 100-300 old *L* series (not the non-L version) and the 70-210 f4 slide zoom...but I've got no regrets at all with this, irrespective of the price.Read full review
Well were do i start Really, this is a Old designed lens, and it is one of the oldest lens still in manufacture. you really have to make the decision is this lens for you or not. It is no the sharpest lens in the world. compared to the 135mm L f2.8. but if you require the original Portrait lens, with the benefit of built in switchable soft focus , this is the kiddy. It is nice and light and very compact for all that it gives you. you also have to way up the cots of the newer L series lens. I said earlier that the lens is not the sharpest lens in the world, probably that is a over statement really. its certainly sharp for portraits. And to be honest I have had no issues printing images from with this lens at Full A3. If you are a fan of Prime lens like i am then it is a must for the Camera bag.Read full review
