This is a prime lens and works perfectly for macro photography. It is internally focussing and therefore the focal length does not change. It would be great to have a product manual explaining everything on the lens in detail, its use and how to operate.

I bought this lens and after trying it out I deicided it wasn’t what I was looking for, as I really wanted a macro that I could use in hand held shooting, and this one requires a tripod in most situations. I returned it but luckily I found a good deal on the L-series 100mm lens and bought that one instead. Major upgrade! Go for the L-series model if your budget allows it, it’s worth every penny!

If you want to take really professional looking macro photos at a relatively reasonable price this is the lens for you. The results that I've had attaching it to my Canon 60D are amazing (hover flies have really cute faces!) Close up shots are its selling points, photos are really crisp and I use this as my main lens these days, only changing it ffor when I need to use a zoom. I'm not a camera geek but I do know a good product when I see it, and when it carries the Canon brand name, you know you just can't go wrong. Highly recommended.

Spent the summer doing macro photography using an old lens and a macro filter, very hard work with such a shallow depth of field. Then I bought this amazing lens second hand and have never looked back. It has two focusing ranges with a minimum of 31cm which was great for the insects I was shooting, even subjects as small as 4mm which when cropped and sharpened in photoshop were reasonable images. As the range from 31cm to infinity can be focused on, the lens takes decent shots of larger more distant subjects as well. Focusing is very rapid and accurate as you would hope from a USM lens. All in all this is a great lens for macro photography and if you can afford an IS version it is even better having borrowed one for a few days. I used mine with a Canon 70D

I have rated 4 out of 5 for overall rating and picture quality purely because I am probably average, and the lens is probably excellent, hence meet half way, plus a bit! . I am new to macro photography and I must say that I was impressed with the difference this macro lens makes. This lens opens up a whole new world in photography that throws in a new dimension that challenges me again. The feel of the lens is solid and sturdy, and it absolutely does what it says on the tin ( that's if you understand what it says on the tin). It also makes a good portrait lens as its clear and crisp and not as intrusive as the 50mm. Sorry 50mm, but there is a new favourite in the class!! Would recommend...
