  • Amazingly good for the money

Literally got this lens delivered today and came home to go out and try it out - Auto focus is new to me following over 30 years of manual focus 35mm film camera use , So i am reading and buying a lot of lenses simply trying them out and finding which works best . So far this one is deffinatly the best , and surprisingly the cheapest so far ? . Set at it's lowest 18mm , at a distance of around 14 feet in my kitchen i can see 2/3 of the rear 12 foot wall . Rembering that my camera is of the APSc varriety and the 18mm =30mm or so due to the times 1.5 effect . The wide angle image taken was the first i had taken with any lens fitted to the old K200d 10mp Pentax where i could fully zoom in on the camera display and view a clear image .With the Tetley tea bag box on the work top at the other end of the room being clear and easily readable . Off out down the woods and the difference is apparent instantly . A quick test moving from 35mm ( my old lenses lowest setting but =to 50mm or so due to the APSc sensor ) to 18mm gave as suspected around double the viewable area .And again sharp and full of colour from the Bluebells and trees , even down to zooming in on the camera display to the bark on back ground trees around 35 to 40 foot away . Set at it's 50mm max magnification ( =to around 75mm with my APSc sensor ) the resulting image size is almost identical in size when i closed my eye on the viewfinder and opened my free eye doing a left to right blinking .And again , producing exceedingly good quality images , though i was in AV mode at between an f 5.6 and F8 due to the shifting light as clouds moved over the sun . In full auto mode i found that a AV compensation of -1 gave a superior finnish to the images captured by darkening them slightly and bringing out the greens with the sun light reflections coming from them . And having the extra 2mm or so of girth over the old 35-80mm SMC FA lens makes it easier to grip when moving from 18 to 50mm .I have breifly tried out the front mounted manual fine focus , and it seems to work alright , though so far the lens has autofocused admirably , being both accurate and quick .Seemingly so far lacking any hunting around for the focus point as such as my Tamron 28-80mm lens does ( along with quite a lot of banging against the infinity stop ) .None of this with the Pentax though . Hand held low shots just above woodland flowers gave a lower 1/3 out of focus with the top 2/3 of the image being sharp and contrasty as the 18mm infinity focal point kicked in at around 5 feet from the camera .Giving a nice fade to the lower of the image with easily zoomed and / or cropped upper 2/3 from the flowers to the trees in the back ground 20 foot away being focused and sharp reaching out right across the image . I have been waiting a while to get one at the right price and the wait was well worth it . It is as yet the best little lens i have found for my aging Pentax K200d and it will be deffinatly a take everywhere lens that will get a lot of use in the years to come . One would be amazing on a newer 24mp camera ( I can wish ) as the results from a mere 10mp one are outstandingly good .
