Metal Detectors
There are metal detectors for industrial and security alongside those used for recreation and archaeology. In fact, with hoards being found with values into their millions, the sport of metal detecting is booming.
Metal Detector Components
In its most basic form, metal detectors consist of a search coil (of which there are five kinds), a shaft, a control box and a stabiliser for the hand or the arm. As a rule of thumb, the more advanced the metal detector is the more information that will be provided about the type of find and depth.
Types of Metal Detector Technologies
BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) is the most affordable type of metal detector to purchase but they lead to less accuracy and have less control than other types. These models are perfect for beginners
VLF (Very Low Frequency) is the most popular technology used in a detector and uses a receiver and a transmitter coil with phase shifting, great for serious hobbyists.
PI (Pulse Induction) uses a single coil and is able to pick up metals far deeper than VLF and BFO models. Considered to be superior by many users, these models are ideal for serious enthusiasts and professionals alike.
Pinpointer Metal Detectors
Pinpointer metal detectors are an essential ancillary item for many detectorists. Usually the size of a mobile phone, they are cylindrical and have 360 degree side detection as well as tip detection. Once the main metal detector has identified a target, a Pinpointer detector can home in on it, drastically reducing the time taken to get finds out of the ground.
Multi Sensor Metal Detectors
Used by professionals and DIY enthusiasts alike, multi sensor detectors are handheld and designed to identify iron, copper and aluminium pipes, metal and wood studs and live AC wires that are concealed within walls.
