I bought this book out of loyalty to the series. I must say that it is an impressive volume, with many weird and wonderful illustrations. Unfortunately I am not enjoying reading it quite as much as I had expected. No doubt the characters are clear in the mind of the author, but for me that clarity does not translate into my mind's eye. A (deliberately) superficial writing style may be intended to appeal to a young audience, but I find it leaves me unable to identify with most of the characters - so as I continue through the story I find myself simply reading it, rather than feeling it. Also because so many outlandish characters come and go, and they have been only superficially outlined for us, I find it very hard to recollect anything about them from previous encounters or to empathise with them. The book is OK, and fans of Clive Barker will persevere with it (as I am doing), but I don't consider it to be anything near one of his best works. I give it three stars more for the overall weight and impressiveness of the actual book than the story itself.Read full review
