If you are a serious student of African history, you must read this book (it is not for the casual reader). Gomez is a scholar of the highest order and has a resplendent vocabulary as well. The glory of the book is that it links written and oral sources authoritatively and places the West African kingdoms in the larger context they deserve. This is indeed a piece of work.

Gomez is a giant. He is re-working interpretation of historical documentation in Medieval West Africa and his interpretations (that Medieval political, economic and social patterns had an effect on Atlantic ones) is in-line with that of Toby Green (2013), but this is a much more thorough study. Gomez is one of the foremost historians on Arabic-language texts in West Africa and has worked on this topic (writing his dissertation on Bundu in Senegal) for nearly 40 years. This is a foundational contribution.
