I'd probably go for 5/5 for Airplane and 3/5 for the sequel, but have split the difference. Airplane didn't have much of a plot (the sequel has less), but they both make up for it with the running gags, the wordplay gags, the visual gags and the audio gags (notice how every time you see the jet airliner in flight they play a propeller plane soundtrack?). I think after all this time I've spotted all the silly stuff going on in the background, but I keep looking out for new stuff anyway. I travel through US airports a fair bit, and am always reminded of something from these films. They must have been huge fun for the cast to make and I've enjoyed watching them. The original is my favourite, but there are some magic cameos in the sequel. It's all harmless fun, maybe not to everyone's taste. but I love them.Read full review
Airplane!: Voted "one of the 10 funniest movies ever made" by the American Film Institute, Airplane! is a masterpiece of off-the-wall comedy. Featuring Robert Hays as an ex-fighter pilot forced to take over the controls of an airliner when the flight crew succumbs to food poisoning; Julie Hagerty as his girlfriend/ stewardess/ co-pilot; and a cast of all-stars including Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Leslie Nielsen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and more! Their hilarious high jinks spook airplane disaster flicks, religious zealots, television commercials, romantic love...the list whirls by in rapid succession. And the story races from one moment of zany fun to the next! Airplane 2: The Sequel: There's a mad bomber on board, the first lunar shuttle is about to self-destruct, the engines are not working, and worse of all - the flight crew discovers they are completely out of coffee! It's the high-flying lunacy of 'Airplane!' all over again, as Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty fly totally out of ozone to recreate their hilarious original roles. The crew of crazies includes Peter Graves, Lloyd Bridges, William Shatner, Chad Everett, Sonny Bono, Raymond Burr and many others. Can Hays save the day again - without caffeine? I brought this movie to add to my collection. Although I mainly brought it for the 1st film both are extremely funny and entertaining. Airplane! is the film that made Leslie Nielsen into a star and was the original platform for the spoof comedy. The funniest thing about these films is that while unbeleiveably funny, the charcters in the film all take what's going on very seriously and never drop the idea that what's going on is in fact serious and not funny at all. These films are an essential buy for any lover of comedy and if you have seen the Naked gun then you will love this too.
5/5 for Airplane. 3/5 for Airplane 2. The first is much more funnier and to be honest the second is not that funny at all, rather like a film with a strong(ish) storyline.
