In my youth I was introduced to Al Stewarts album Past Present and Future and I instantly liked it. His ability to write songs on a historical theme but from a personal perspective I found enjoyable. I remember being in record shop (Cloud 9 which was by Wimbledon station) when the record company rep came in with the white label copy of his next album "The Year of the Cat" (that dates it!) Anyway we listened to it and whilst I found it agreeable it was not the same, definitely more commercial. Happily, this collection features a lot of his earlier work which is reminiscent of a cross between Cat Stevens and Chris De Burgh with some Ralph McTell thrown in for good measure. The vocals are always pleasing as he varies the pitch and tone regularly, no same old dirges here! I am really glad that I bought this album, it is a good cross section of his work and for me represents an under valued talent.
