Around 1990, there were a few romantic comedies where the man dies. This is the first of two by Dreyfuss & Hunter. Good, if you like shouty acting.
Dreyfuss & Hunter in the first of two films in which they are romantically linked, and Dreyfuss is an over-the-top, passionate character who dies prematurely. Two years later they did `Once Around', which I found to be more memorable at a distance of 30 years. In between, they had competition from the far more famous, and similarly-themed, `Ghost'. In `Always', both Dreyfuss & Hunter are both very passionate, and engage in a certain amount of the sort of rowdy fighting that some Americans think of as good acting, cf. `Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' After Dreyfuss dies, Hunter mourns him for a spell. However, an angel (Audrey Hepburn, with a pronounced French accent in one of her final performances) sends Dreyfuss back as a ghost to help Hunter move on and to inspire a young pilot. However much Dreyfuss's character learns to be selfless, one feels this is a lesson that the actor fails to learn. This film seems to be something of an ego trip for both lead actors, who relish the opportunity to try to carry a film on pure acting and energy, with little plot or action to support them, like 1930s Hollywood stars. As I say, they only partly succeed, though they do better the next time with `Once Around'.Read full review

This film gives me hope, when life is sometimes so hopeless.
Always is one of my all time favoritr films, I first saw it about 15 years ago & bought a cassette copy, I recently bought a dvd copy. Ive lost count of how many times ive watched it, but each time it makes me laugh & it makes me cry. I cant say its a chick flic, because my husband also loves it. I love the relationship between the 3 main stars & one of my favorite scenes is when drefuss buys hunter what she calls girl clothes & when she parades down the stairs in them, all the other pilots want to dance with her.
