An excellent all-round text for first year Archaeology students, with an engaging writing style and a wealth of interesting information, excellent diagrams and high quality colour photographs. The only criticisms I'd have are the somewhat disjointed effect from having a large numbers of "breakout boxes" which in some cases take up two pages, with reference to these sprinkled throughout the text- sometimes many pages away from the "breakout box". So, if one is reading the body of the text, there may be a jump of several pages to "take up the story again". Also, while the authors are British, the text contains a mixture of British and American spellings eg. "axe" and "center" and to presumably cater for US readers nearly every dimension has an Imperial/US conversion in brackets. Apart from the slightly turgid sections on how ancient societies were ordered and how ancient people thought (in other words, dipping into sociology and psychology) this book would be an excellent read for anyone with a passing interest in Archaeology- despite the rather "textbookish" title. Apparently this book is considered to be one of the best, if not the best textbook for first year Archaeology students and it's easy to see why.Read full review
