I was very surprised and delighted at the quality of the live recording and the standard of playing by the group .The D VD with English sub titles was very interesting giving some background information about the recording venue etc. The recording confirms my believe that the older quality recording equipment in the hands of an experienced sound engineer can produce first class results I have played the recordings on 3-4 occasions and am hearing new details each time .

Apart from the price which is very good for three sacds and a dvd this is worth buying for the sound quality alone. Brilliant!

I feel a little sorry for “Jazz at the Pawnshop”, over the years, it has been somewhat abused by us Audiophiles! It has kind of turned in to one of “those” CDs or records which one only hears at a Hi-fi Show. This is a real shame, because behind the “audiophile” bits of these recordings (O.R.T.F. microphone layout, Neumann U47, KM56s & M49 microphones, Nagra IV recorder), are some seriously good jazz musicians; Arne Domnerus, Bengt Hallberg, Lars Estrand, Georg Rieded, Egil Johansen. Very “trad jazz” rather than anything kind of blue or be bop related, this is just good old fashioned fun. For those who have never heard these recordings, they are 100% live, even down to the cash register making it’s appearance felt! A “fly on the wall” recording. Most audiophile stuff tends to be a bit lacking in soul and emotion. And OK, this is no “great” “ultra” jazz performance, but it is very polished (in a good way) and very smooth (in an equally good way!). The original disc has been supplemented by volume two and volume three (good vibes at the Pawn Shop) but the whole lot can be purchased now as a three box CD set, or even better an SACD set (stereophonic and surround), and of course high quality vinyl, and collectors can seek out both the HDCD versions, and the XRCD versions (JVC K2 processing). These recordings are now 30 years old. (6 & 7th December 1976) recorded at “The Pawnshop (Stampen) Jazz Club in Stockholm, Sweden, and to celebrate there is a 30th Anniversary box set containing three CD/SACDs (stereo & multi channel) and a DVD. Although I own the original record, I could not resist the box set! Enjoy…Read full review
