I first saw this 35 years ago and loved the scenery, the dialogue and the two leads. Ignore the stupid comment that the rest of the film was badly cast. Clive Revill as the Hotel manager was superb and Oscar nominated, both the housemaid and hotel valet, were very amusing as well. In addition the music is beautiful, especially “Senza Fine” by Gino Pauli. This film will cheer you up on a rainy day, and make you smile from beginning to end. It is not a laugh out loud film, but a typical Billy Wilder picture that has you smiling all the way through, at the characters as well as the dialogue. I wish more people were aware of “Avanti” as I have never come across anyone who didn’t enjoy its charm.

This film is a classic Jack Lemmon is at his phrenetic finger snapping finest whilst Juliet Mills is absolutely sublime she shows calm level headed restraint, all the other actors and actresses make this film memorable, Clive Revill as the Hotel manager is superb the Maid and the Valet as a side story are wonderful and add another light hearted comedy aspect to the plot, and before Del boy and Rodney were even thought of the Trotter family of Ischia were wheeling and dealing their way across the screen, this is a subtle comedy not brash and in your face it is gentle and thought provoking, I had sympathy for all of the characters and the cinematography was fantastic, it inspired a little fantasy in a deep recess of my mind - wouldn't it be lovely to go on holiday once a year to a beautiful idyllic place and fall in love with a perfect stranger and without malice to friends, family or loved ones keep attending this tryst because your heart wants to. This movie is thoroughly recommended from this hopeless romantic to all you budding hopeless romantic's enjoy - I do often.Read full review

I love Italy and I love the Italians so for me this film is a scream and I LOVE IT TOO! It takes light hearted fun at the Italians the Americans and the English. Jack and Juliette meet up as they have been told his father and her mother have died on the island of Ischia. Jack is on good form, not quite so good as he was in "How to Murder your Wife" but well on the way! Juliette is not as good as Verna Lise in that film either but puts in a good performance. If you can take the subject matter in your stride it is a light hearted fun caper with gorgeous surroundings and backdrop that can bear more than one viewing. I guess it has a predictable ending but that suits me fine! I see a previous review compliments the Hotel Manager's performance, Ditto! He is superb in this role! A fun romantic film.Read full review
Wonderful performances by the two stars and also the famous Italian actors involved in this film. Anyone who has lived in Italy will easily relate to Jack Lemmons frustration with the incredible beaurocracy of Italy in those days. Highly entertaining and engaging with beautiful Italian scenery as a bonus. A good film to watch

An excellent comedy. Well paced the laughs came easily and often. I enjoyed the scene on the aircraft at the beginning and the scenes at the hotel, mortuary and vineyard were just as funny. I wish Juliet Mills had made more comedy films.
