I read the book over 30 years ago, in UK it was called "The day the century ended", and was struck by the contrast between prewar USA and the effects of the second world war on ordinary soldiers. Not recognising, for many years, the US name as "Between heaven and hell" I had not sought the film but trying to buy the book again recently I became aware of the different titles and also looked for a copy of the film. It is an unusual story and examines critically the savage effects infantry in the second world war suffered. It does not glorify war but seems some how to look forward to the disatrous war in VietNam and foreshadows the morale-crushing effects of that later conflict. To me Robert Wagner was a revelation; Broderick Crawford was as good as ever and Buddy Ebsen (known to many from "Beverly Hillbillies") was also a great surprise as Wagner's buddy - sorry about the pun!Read full review
