My second Bruno book and I am a convert. The style is reporter simple, but the author transmits his love of rural France on every page; gives a complex criminal case a realistic simple tone; draws its characters, including Bruno, in terms that fully involve the reader; and in this book gives insight into the mechanism of how Périgord truffles come to market.

Martin Walker knows the area and his subject well. No vague hint of history of the region/country he involves you in the full effect as well as telling a cracking good story. One of the darker episodes in France's history but told in an brilliant way, in the backdrop of small town comings and goings and intrigue. He always manages to get at least one recipe in his books including his beloved truffles!
