Unfortunately, Alison Weir's text isn't pleasurable to read because it's so repetitious in its use of similar-sounding complete sentences rather than the contracted 'notes' you'd anticipate in a potted biography. Instead of (for instance) 'Born... Buried...' it says 'He was born... She was buried...' repeating 'he was' and 'she was' over and over and over again in a manner you wouldn't expect from either a well-edited reading book or reference text. The publisher's typesetting is equally hard to follow where, for long-lived monarchs with complicated family trees across many marriages, we're presented with a confusion of multiple indentations over several pages and inadequate subheadings to keep you on track. However, if the same information was presented better, with revised text and improved layout, I'd certainly give it another go.Read full review
