In all honesty, I was not a Britney fan from the very start. After purchasing more recent records from Ms. Spears, I decided I'd be cheating myself out of a collection if I didn't go back and pick up the classics, where it all began. Some of the tracks on Baby One More Time can sound a bit dated, but typical of the sound which was pop music in 1999. My favourites personally are the more up-tempo tracks for example Baby One More Time, Crazy and The Beat Goes On. There are plenty of ballads on this album and they can sound a bit cheesy compared to those by more mature, established artists from 1999. I would rate the tracks are follows: 1 ...Baby One More Time 5/5 - Classic Britney! Her debut single. 2 (You Drive Me) Crazy 5/5 - Another single. Again, a classic! 3 Sometimes 4/5 - Britney's first cheesy ballad single. Listenable due to its single status 4 Soda Pop 3/5 - Some dodgy vocals from Ms. Spears in places but catchy 5 Born To Make You Happy 4/5 - Another slow single. Less cheesy than Sometimes 6 From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart 2/5 - One I always skip! Nice vocals though. This was a single in some countries 7 I Will Be There 4/5 - Cheesy again but catchy and typical early Britney 8 I Will Still Love You 3/5 - A duet. Again one I tend to skip 9 Thinkin' About You 5/5 - Mid tempo but catchy 10 E-Mail My Heart 3/5 - Cheesy ballad. One I skip but can appreciate why some enjoy it 11 The Beat Goes On 4/5 - Cover. Pretty much identical to the original, but should be quite well known 12 Deep In My Heart 5/5 - Cheesy, very catchy and more classic Britney Overall album rating 4/5 - slightly heavy on the cheesy tracks, another couple of uptempo tracks would have been great but as it is, a solid introduction to Britney Spears. Maybe would have scored a 5/5 if this was being written in 1999 when this was the "in" pop sound.Read full review
Britney Spears has had a distinctly uneven career. But this, her debut single, still sounds fresh. It's a remarkably good song, and Ms Spears did it justice. Listening to it, it's hard not to think of the images from the video - which may affect the listener's enjoyment one way or the other. (I've heard very harsh things said of the video.) Be that as it may, the video is not included on this three track single. Track one is the radio version - the definitive version of the song. Track two is an instrumental - I think it's exactly the same as track one, but without Ms Spears' voice. (Both tracks one and two have same playing time - 3 minutes 30 seconds.) Track three is another song - "Autumn Goodbye" - with a Britney Spears vocal. The lyric says "I never promised you a happy ending/ You never said you wouldn't make me cry..." - which makes me (at least) think of the some of the things that have since befallen Britney Spears. On that basis, it leaves me feeling rather sad. It's a good enough song, in its own right, but not as good as "Baby One More Time". Then again, I don't expect the B side song to be as good as the A side one - and B sides are often a lot less worthwhile than this. Overall - worth buying both as a slice of pop history, and as record in its own right. Play it - it's probably better than you think it is.Read full review
A great example of 90's/early 00's pop music.Britney being the front runner of the teen sensations of that era brings the bubblegum pop to the fore on this.Somtimes a bit too sickly sweet,its still has amazing examples of some brilliant pop music (Born to make you happy,Sometimes,Crazy and of course baby one more time) Very recommended for Pop lovers and pop culture lovers.
original album featuring the number one hit baby one more time. although there are numerouse other compilations and re-releases featuring this track i couldn't find this album on itunes. my daughter loves it and the band i'm in might even try a rock verson of it? only for fun. i think it has a couple of other early hits, over all a good pop album for young girls.
loved this cd so much i have owned a copy of this since it was released years ago and i loved it so much that i was gutted when i discovered my kids had scrapped it across the room on our wood floor so therefore causing a hughe scrap and causing the disc not to play but now i have just replaced my copy by buying another from ebay its brilliant i love it britney is amazing lol
