Japanese masterpiece from 1967 tells the story of a group of war-weary Japanese soldiers striving to dodge British shells and bullets in Burma as WW2 there staggers to its final stages. One of the men becomes separated from his mates, steals a monk's robe and embarks on a one-man quest of pity. A telling touch is that when the soldiers fear for their lives they often break into song - and they specially like singing the Japanese version of No Place Like Home. An original, touching and fascinating film.
