This is one of the best Regaee albums ever and a must have for any avid listener. The songs on this album are equally suitable for the office or the gym, as they are relaxing but commanding.
It is hard to overrate the historical importance of 'Marcus Garvey' by Burining Spear. It is one of the top roots reggae albums. One of the most influential. Still listened widely. And - I believe - still influencing contemporary musicians. Yes, the specialists are not very happy with the way Island label treated both the album and its dub version. They say that the sound was made softer, that it lost big part of its sonic depth so it could be easier digested by the european listeners of those times. And still - if you don't know that - the album will sound super solid and super hard. Total classics that comes in economic version (two albums on one cd, that is not that expensive at all). So you might ask why I rated it just as "Good"? Well, it's because how I feel generally about the whole carrier of Burning Spear. 'Marcus Garvey' is an album of militant, political roots reggae, full of political messages. May be its militant, political ideas where very important at the time the album went out. May be that's where its influence start. But today we live in different world and - I believe - we have a bit different ideas about music as a tool of political reasoning. I believe Burning Spear working for this album were so much concerned about militant messages, that they forgot sometimes that they are making a musical record. The political lyrics subdue the music. That's why I prefer later Burning Spear records, some even from the nineties, because they put less stress on politics and rational messages, and more stress on pure musical expression. Burning Spear are the masters of clean, flowing and rather meditative reggae sound. And from the perspective of today this sound even more revolutionary than the early political messages. In one of his later records (unfortunatelly, I don't remember which of the records it was), Winston Rodney, the man behind Burning Spear, repeats over and over the phrase 'I'm the music'. This is his greatest message. Most political and revolutionary. Especially today.Read full review
