I was impressed to see the thoroughness of the costuming in this. The research was also top notch I didn't remember the complexity of the story I was 15 when it was screened originally. it is relevant for today when you think of the difference between old aristocratic money and those who have made money through being an entrepreneur. It was quite hard to source the first series Prompts some memories 30 years since a war with Argentina and Saturday evenings before I was responsible for anything of note Religion is also a topical subject, and currently Radio 4 are doing a few programs which argue the present Anglican C of E church was patterned during and shortly after this War Got this as an Easter present for my wife who has never seen it

If you love history in general and the English civil war in particular, By The Sword Divided is definitely for you. Following the lives of the aristocratic Lacey family, the series charts the intrigues and divisions that are caused by the civil war. The BBC excels in historical productions and this is one of their best, the costumes and even the eloquent 17th century way of speaking truly capture the flavour of the period and contribute to a series not to be missed.
I loved this when it first came out on TV when I was a kid and used to watch it avidly every week with my Mum. It's lovely to see that it's aged well as I wasn't disappointed when I watched it this time! The cast, the costumes, the music, in fact everything was as good as I remembered it and I would recommend it to anyone who has any kind of interest in British History. It's a true classic in its own right!
