Short stories are rarely my cup of tea.Reading a collection can be rather like having lunch with a terrible conversationalist. You are rapidly expected to pick up cues, you desperately search for common ground, you begin to feel you are making headway and then-wham-they abruptly change the subject leaving you to start the process all over again. However there is not a dud in this fine, very catholic selection.I enjoyed them all-although slightly less the super natural ones. The biggest laurel bough goes to the first story-The Islands.Subtle and spare, ambiguous in emotional balance.I had never encountered the author before, and now look forward to reading more of her. The only thing lacking was a story from a cat's viewpoint. It would be fascinating to understand the mentality of a pet who can disappear for months or even years, and then suddenly return, purring and totally confident of a warm welcome.Read full review
