This is suitable for the older 3.5 inch spinning platter SATA hard drives. Apart from the USB connection to the PC it has its own power supply and its own on / off swtich. What it is good for is accessing the data from a drive you have removed (and replaced) from a PC. You can write to it as well and of course plug it into any compatable device. What it is not really good for is converting an old 3.5 SATA drive into a removeable drive, the are better solutions for doing this. The drive caddies for the more modern 2.5 inch drives (whether they are platter or SSD) are much better, they are cosiderably smaller, look a lot more sexy, don't need their own power supply and don't need to be switched on. Oh and they are about a fifth of the price and they generally run an awful lot faster. So yes this is good and effective for providing access to obsolete drives but they are not a solution for creating a storage system out of spare drives you have lying around.Read full review

I just needed an enclosure for an "old" drive extracted from a defunct laptop. Did plenty of searching on eBay and decided to go for this model as it seemed to be perfect for my needs. Opening the box and reading the instruction leaflet inside gave me a bit of a start because the first thing I read was it was only compatible with a 2.5 inch drive - my drive is 3 inch and the online description said it would be suited to both sizes. Next on the instruction sheet - open the case. Well with no diagram or text to explain how this should be done it was going to be brute force as there was no easy sliding section anywhere. Eventually got the sliding lid off and was relieved to find my 3 inch drive slotted in quite easily. Back on with the lid, hooked it all up and it started first time. My operating system is WIN10 and I used one of the USB3 sockets for the link up. A couple of other minor irritations are (1) the power switch does not have a very positive action and it's easy to press it to switch it off and inadvertently you've activated the switch twice so the drive goes off and then on again and (2) the USB fitting on the enclosure, similar to the type found on printers, seems to be a bit wobbly in the socket. Overall, forget the instruction leaflet, make sure the USB cable is not liable to be snagged by anything nd, if possible, avoid using the on/off switch then you've got a great little enclosure!Read full review

A little tricky to work out how to open the casing but after a couple of minutes (I wanted to be careful not to force or break anything) I sussed it, placed the HDD inside, powered up and bingo... Worked perfectly.

I have tried this enclosure with 2.5" & 3.5" drives and it works well with both. I chose this model for the sliding cover, which makes it easy to change drives while keeping everything neat and tidy. I had to smear a little vaseline on the slides as it was a bit stiff to open. I have deducted one star as I think the plastic construction is a bit flimsy.
