An eclectic collection of films is represented here: three B&W early 40s pictures with Marlene Dietrich, a number of Republic B-pictures from the 40s; the John Ford trio: Rio Grande, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Fort Apache; six contemporaneous war films, including Sands of Iwo Jima and Back to Bataan. Also, a sprinkling of bigger productions, which include The Conqueror (Genghis Khan biopic), the very familiar Rooster Cogburn, and De Mille's Reap the Wild Wind (an excellent Paulette Goddard and groundbeaking underwater colour photography, unequalled until Disney's 20000 Leagues under the Sea). The picture quality is generally pretty good, though a little over-exposed at times, as in War of the Wildcats (well worth sticking with for the excellent closing stunt work). There are also individual plastic boxes to protect the DVDs from damage. Overall, new fans of John Wayne should probably look elsewhere for most of his very best colour films. However, more seasoned fans should appreciate this large collection as complementing what they already own, and for giving a fairly complete picture of The Duke's middle period, before he became the ultimate iconic cowboy actor.Read full review

A good & varied selection of John Wayne films, from early in his career, to his last one, and covering different topics, not just westerns.
