I look after a lady with fairly advanced Dementia and I bought this Dad's Army DVD because this series is one of the few things that still makes her laugh. Although she may not actually remember the context of it, she gets the jokes and inuendo, which come thick and fast, and I think she feels comfortable in the knowledge that the characters are familiar and not at all threatening. For me, this is the saddest of the series. I have watched the majority of the preceeding DVD's and viewed the series on TV as a child. The players are more aged and loveable faces have disappeared like Joe,(James Beck) the Black-marketeer, who sadly died before his time. The story-lines are as good as ever but I found the audience laughter intrusive and it sometimes detracted from the flow of comic dialogue, which is always so expertly communicated by these clever actors. There is an air that times are changing and the end is nigh, for the War as well as the series. John Le Mesurier looks ill and gaunt and I don't know how darling Godfrey managed to stay upright half the time. In conclusion: If you have watched and enjoyed the earlier episodes; this is an apt and fitting conclusion to what is a triumphant tribute to how Britain and in particular, Little England, was during that part of our history. Underneath the jokes and tomfoolery was a serious and stalwart message that we would, under no circumstances, be defeated physically or mentally. If we stuck together and did our bit, however small, we would, in the end, overcome. In these times of World crisis, I hope that these qualities can still be found bubbling under the surface of our modern Britain.Read full review
The last series ever made of this epic television programme is a great buy and will enhance any collection. Whether you have the first series or none at all, watching any episode of Dad's Army is special and this last series is no different. Funny, hilarious, enjoyable to watch as they all are, the whole platoon have their own individual characters and are a much loved British Institution. I bought it to enjoy and keep and watch again or lend to friends. Its timeless and won't appear old fashioned if I watch it in again in 5 years time as the programme is set sometime in 1940-1942. Excellent.
