good sound and most settings are easy

Easy to use (for an AVR), looks good and pretty well built. Great sound but perhaps lacking the 'wow factor'.
I bought the 3313 after briefly trying an older Denon; the 3311 (which was faulty). The 3311, despite originally costing around £1k was built really cheaply and in operation had the feel of a budget receiver, however one area it excelled in was an almost holographic sound which didn't tend to localise surround effects to the speakers. The 3313 so far (i've not listened to a huge amount of content yet) gives less of this impression. Whilst very good, the sound seems a bit smoother and less crisp in tonal character and with fewer "wow!" moments; perhaps a little less high-end sounding than the older, similarly priced model. The 3313 does however look far more like a £1k AVR with nice solid and positive button actions, a far better remote, more use of metal casing and a more sophisticated look with its minimalist brushed metal front panel. The internet radio is a joy to use, with channel changes almost as fast as an fm radio (assuming a fast broadband connection). The faulty 3311 I had constantly buffered, but this may have been a fault with the network card rather than a weakness of the model. But so far this AVR-3313's internet radio has been faultless. It's also much faster to store favorites with half as many required button pushes as the 3311. The sound quality of the internet radio is excellent; to my ears and using the calibrated audessy settings, high bitrate stations sound even better than the TV and some DVD/Bluray discs! I don't know if this is a feature of all Denons but I do find the unit display a bit dull and hard to see in the daylight even on its highest setting, though the text is larger than the 3311. I suppose it's designed for darkened rooms. Set up and control is far easier than an old Yamaha I had. On-screen displays walk you through every step of the initial calibration and the normal menu functions also have brief descriptions so overall this is about as easy as AVR operation gets. The unit is heavy but probably of average weight for an AVR and it runs fairly warm, but not as hot as some. But as with all AVR's avoid using in a cabinet without fans; it will slow cook over time. One annoyance for me is the zone 2/3 function. It mutes and causes a temporary blanking of the image when turned on and off which my old Yamaha and the Denon 3311 didn't do. You also only have a choice of HDMI AVR OR TV sound output (my TV doesn't have ARC), so whereas with other AVR's that I've used I could output the digital HDMI sound to the speakers and to the TV which permitted an in-sync analogue output to the zone 2 from the returned TV sound, now I have to put up with an awful echo from my zone 2 (kitchen next door) when I'm listening to the TV in both rooms. But perhaps that's a niche requirement. Finally, avoid the Denon app for this model. Well it doesn't work properly or reliably for me and my HTC M8 but according to the reviews it does work for some. In conclusion I am perhaps being hyper-critical pointing out some of the flaws above. Overall I'm very happy with the AVR-3313 and I may change my mind on the sound quality once i've listened to more material from a variety of sources and surround formats.
